I’ve had this in mind for months now. It’s the Allegory of Painting. Cesare Ripa was a Renaissance iconographer who wrote about how the allegory of painting must be a woman with unruly hair in a colourful dress and a necklace with a mask pendant, and she must be gagged to show that painting is silent poetry. My gag is a bra.
