Preparing a Textured Surface

I’m starting a commission of a beautiful little dachshund, and so, I have prepped the canvas by putting on a wash first. For this I painted burnt umber with just mineral spirits on the entire board and then dabbed more mineral spirits across the top so that it ran down and created a textured surface.
