Painting Hands

Posted on April 8, 2018

WIP: I managed to get these hands and jacket done today. Hands are just as expressive as faces. All that tiny musculature has to look exactly right so as to convey the correct expression.

Preparing a Textured Surface

Posted on April 6, 2018

I’m starting a commission of a beautiful little dachshund, and so, I have prepped the canvas by putting on a wash first. For this I painted burnt umber with just mineral spirits on the entire board and then dabbed more mineral spirits across the top so that it ran down and created a textured surface. I’ll start the drawing portion when this is dry…

A White Shirt

A white shirt is anything but white.

Painting Fur

Posted on April 4, 2018

I’ve been working this fur for an hour now. I think it’s time to walk away for a bit, then come back with fresh eyes to make sure all the forms, shadows, and ultimately, the volume of the person under the fur, look correct.

Two Down…

WIP: a few adjustments need to be made but the underpainting is almost there on these two figures…

I’ve almost finished moving into the new studio and my work schedule is slowly getting back to normal. There’s a lot of good light in here, and more storage!

Toning Up Skin

Posted on March 9, 2018

WIP: In an effort to make my figures look younger I’m toning up arms and not including wrinkles. Something tells me that the models won’t mind.

Gestural Drawing

Posted on February 9, 2018

I am very slowly improving at figure drawing (I’ve been going to an open drawing session every other week for a couple months). I really need a lot more practice though, in order to develop a style. I would really like these drawings to be more beautiful, elegant, and gestural, although I find myself mostly focusing on trying to get proportions exactly right without erasing at all.

Evolution of a Head

That lip curl is really important, but I think I’ve got it now. It makes or breaks the facial expression.
